A Patient’s Guide to Preparing for Surgery

Surgery can be scary and it is common to be anxious or fearful before undergoing any surgical procedure. There is actually a scientific term, tomophobia, for fear of surgery and it can occur for many reasons; these reasons may be caused by your lack of control or the unusual environment. Whatever the case may be, there are steps you can take to ease your anxiety.

  1. Taking care of you is our top priority; we are in this business and have been for over 50 years because we love it and you! You are our only focus.

  2. Wear loose-fitting clothes. Often, the more comfortable you are physically, the more comfortable you are mentally. In addition to your comfort, these clothes are easy to change in and out of when it is time for your surgery gown.

  3. Bring someone you trust with you! Everyone needs someone; make sure you have someone you know will be there when you wake up and to help aid in your recovery!

  4. Be honest with your doctor! The pre-surgery rules are for your safety. If you eat or drink after your allowed time, let us know so we can take the appropriate action!

  5. Inform your doctor of any allergies and/or medications, including aspirins and herbal supplements! Bring a comprehensive list so that we can assess how to best treat you! Everything has different reactions, so it is important that we are aware of all medications/supplements to craft your specific treatment plan!

  6. Ask us questions! We are here to help you. If you have questions about anything such as what will be expected of you or how long your recovery period will be, ask us! We would love to assist you and make you comfortable in any way that we can.

Take a deep breath and believe that we are here for you. Trusting in your doctors and their team is the best way to ease your pre-surgery anxiety. Each physician is passionate about being there for you and crafting a plan that works well for you! Contact us today to see how we can help!
